Position Play

The importance and power of position comes from your ability to act last.

Lets say you have AA (nice) and you are first to act (utg, under the gun) after the BB (big blind). If you were to raise now, how many callers are you likely to get?

However, if you were last to act (on the button) and five players call before you, you could now raise, as most players will call another bet, thus doubling the pot.
That's the power of position.

The strength of my starting hand requirements decreases as my position improves, if someone open raises before me then I will usually move my starting requirement up a level and if it has been raised up twice then I will only play premium hands.

The reason why my early position starting hand requirements are so high, is to allow me to call or raise any subsequent raises with confidence in my own hand.

With the middle and late position hands, I want to see the flop as cheaply as possible. I want to flop a big hand. If I don't hit on the flop I will check or fold to any bet.

This is the core of my winning texas holdem strategy and by not folding, I would be making the same costly mistake that a lot of low limit texas holdem players make. Playing Premium Hands »»
